What makes Gretna green famous.
Gretna Green is a small village in Scotland close to the border of England. Every year over 5000 weddings take place there which is almost 1 in 6 of all scottish weddings.
The village became famous, for weddings back in 1754 after Lord Hardwicks marriage act which banned weddings for minors in England without the parents permission. This led to many elopers hopping over the border to get married. Gretna Greens two blacksmiths were allowed to perform the ceremonies, the smiths being referred to as “anvil priests.”

Gretna has its own outlet village which offers designer fashions at outlet prices. It also has cafes and a tourist information centre.
The world famous Blacksmiths shop has many traditional tartans, tweeds, whiskys, jewellery and gifts.

Gretna green is just minutes away from the major highways M6, A74 and A75. It is a good base for touring southern scotland. It is within a short journey of carlisle and a couple of hours drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh.
